The OSLC Food Bank supports individuals and families that experience food insecurity. According to the Canadian Feed the Children organization food security exists “when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.” Food security is linked to poverty and most households that rely on social assistance in Canada are food insecure. One in eight households in Canada, and one in six children under the age of 18 is food insecure.

Open 2 hours per week, people that visit our Food Bank are offered an assortment of food items that are carefully selected to be easy to prepare, safe and nutritious. In 2019, 143 people (households) were served which was an 18% increase over 2018 (121). We saw most of this increase in the summer and fall months which caused us to reach out to the congregation for donations to help stretch our grant funds. We were able to also provide special occasion food hampers for Canada Day and Christmas to a total of 25 clients. This was an additional service to address food security issues experienced by the community.

We are very grateful for financial and in kind contributions to the Food Bank Program. We receive a grant for purchasing groceries from BC Gaming.  In 2019 Cobb’s Bread became a donor through their End-Of-Day Giving Program. Loose Threadz contributed the funds for the special occasion hampers The community has responded in this time of greater need with COVID19 by donating to our gratitude bins outside of the church. We are fortunate to be able to offer this service to the Prince George community and have faith that it is making a small difference. Thank you for your continued support.
