Over the past year church council has been exploring and talking about the possibility of engaging in the Renewal and Redevelopment Process that the BC Synod is currently offering. Two groups of congregations and pastors in the Synod have already been through the 18 month process and there’s a third group/cohort starting in February 2015.
We all know that large programs tend to get bogged down in detail and eventually peter out due to lack of interest. From what we can see this is not such a program. Instead it’s a process, which means that it lays out basic steps that are easily integrated into current structures. Practically speaking it looks like listening deeply to scripture, listening deeply to each other and discerning what that translates into for the group in terms of experiments. At the end of each experiment the group gathers to talk about what they experienced and evaluate the process. Then you go at it again.
In terms of commitment it starts with a dedicated group of 5-6 people called a Guiding Team who go through this process for 18 months and then take their experience and teach others in the congregation. People in other congregations have commented on how it’s a spiritually enlivening and relational building experience.
On behalf of church council we encourage you to prayerfully consider this opportunity to deepen your spiritual walk personally and with your fellow Christian brothers and sisters here at Our Saviour’s. Below is a document called BC Synod – Forming Missional Congregations, which gives more details about the process, its benefits and what’s involved in committing to the Guiding Team. God bless.
Yours in Christ,
Clair Meger – Council Chair
