Scott Mutter - The Aisle

This is a very different picture from anything we have looked at. It is a photograph or more correctly, a photomontage. What are the familiar elements in the photo?

What is your initial reaction to the photo?

Scripture: ISAIAH 40:3-5
3 A voice cries out: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.5 Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

What are the promises outlined in Isaiah?

How do these promises make you feel? Do they inspire you to do anything?

Do you see any common themes running through both the scripture and the photo?

Reflection:

Do you find the photo just interesting, challenging, inspiring or just plain silly? Why?

Technical details:

Scott Mutter (1944-2008) was an American photomontage artist. The technique of photomontage dates back to the 1850’s. Mutter was ‘old school’. He manually took pictures and then put them together until he was satisfied with the result. Today, computer programmes like Photoshop can accomplish more or less what Mutter did. When Mutter was satisfied with the montage, a final photo was taken and posters were reproduced from the photo. This picture is called The Aisle and is also known as Cars in the Cathedral and was done in 1986.
